In a letter sent home to his mother from Meiringen, September 3rd, 1856, Haseltine imparts 'We are stopping here, Meyringen, at a pension kept by Vater Roofam, and which is only meant for artists. We are eleven in all, including two professors, one from the Berlin Academy. This pension has been an artists' resort for more than thirty years and has been visited by some of the most distinguished European ones.
The charming young lady who is at present at the head of the establishment, told me she had been rocked in the cradle by artists, brought up with artists, and now keeps house for artists, and, I daresay, hopes one day to marry an artist and to raise a considerable number of little artists! No other class of people are tolerated here, which is extremely agreeable.
The house is a large-sized Swiss cottage; the rooms are small but neat, and everything is extremely 'gemuthlich'.'
