STUDY OF A YOUNG PEASANT GIRL

THOMAS BARKER of BATH

1769 - 1847
Oil on panel 5 ¾ x 4 ¾ inches
Framed size 10 ½ x 9 ½ inches
Barker became a landscape, genre & figure painter. He is the best known of the famous “Barkers of Bath”, and was a painter of great powers and versatility.
He exhibited 18 works at the Royal Academy, 97 at the British Institute, 3 at the RSBA. In his youth he was discovered by a wealthy and generous coach builder, Mr Spackman, who paid for his education, organized a one man show of his youthful works and sent him to Italy to study.
On his return in 1794 he found that his father had died, his patron was bankrupt and his fiancée, Spackman’s daughter, also dead. Despite these tragic blows Barker worked hard and prospered, courted by numerous private patrons and commercial interests.
He was, however, not talented in managing his financial affairs and died in poverty.

Works in Public Collections: National Gallery (2); VAM (2 paintings, 5 drawings); Holbourne Museum, Bath (15); National Gallery Ireland; Wolverhampton Gallery; Glasgow Gallery; Nottingham Gallery
