The neo-classsical rosewood frame is fine and crisply carved with John Adam style urns to the back supports and delicately carved rosettes and downward swept upholstered arms with acanthus leaf carving. The bow-fronted seat has upturned leaf carving to the frame and blue stripe Gainsborough silk damask re-upholstered to the seat, back and arms. Unusually the seat is not sprung as was the tradition of the mid to late 19th century. The carving is exceptionally crisp, very fine and has a lot of style.
The settee has been recently recovered and upholstered in blue stripped damask.
The Victoria & Albert Museum have a drawing by John Adam of an armchair that has similar characteristics to this 19th century settee
we currently have in stock. Reference, 'Victoria and Albert Museum, English Furniture Designs of the Eighteenth Century". Plate 220
