IN SUMMER & WINTER
Flourished 1790 - 1804
Oils on canvas 16 ½ x 20 ½ inches
Framed sizes 25 x 29 ½ inches
Thomas Hand was born circa 1771 and was a pupil of and assistant to George Morland. He became a faithful follower and factotum of George Morland and assisted in turning out many of ‘Morland’s’ later pictures.
Hands work was lighter in colouring; he used certain yellow and red pigments and had a faster brush technique.
Hand painted the same subjects as Morland and very few are signed. Most of Hands work is sold as Morland with signatures added later. Despite Morland’s wicked sense of humor, with Hand being on the receiving end of much of it, Hand appears to have been a faithful friend who looked after Morland during his wilder times.
He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1790, and 21 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1792 -1804. Much of his work was rustic views and some being pairs.
Hand died six weeks before Morland.
This pair are excellent examples of his work, at its best and are very unusual as both are signed.
A signed landscape is in the Tate Gallery.
