The moulded shield-shaped backs are decorated with chains of bell flowers with elegant tapered back splats that have been painted with leaf and bell flowers and terminate at the bottom of painted fan paterae. The chairs have swept-back scrolled arms and supports and padded seats and stand on painted and gilded square tapered legs and block feet. They retain the original decoration and have not been refreshed.

The chairs closely relate to a design by Hepplewhite illustrated in the first edition of 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholster's Guide', 1788, pl.9. Another armchair of a similar pattern is recorded in the Copping Pritchard collection, illustrated in Ralph Edwards and Percy Macquoid, 'Dictionary of English Furniture', rev.ed., 1954, vol. 1p.294, fig.218 and there are further examples illustrated in Macquoid.
The chairs appear to be in remarkable condition, not cleaned or the paint, gilt or decoration refreshed. The chairs show wear, and in places, bare frame. This only adds to the charm of these highly decorative armchairs.
