This beautiful Bonheur Du Jour dates from around 1895 in the Victorian period, is made from mahogany and is of superb quality. This style of antique desk originates from France where the name means “daytime delight”, by the late 1700s they were made in London and simply called a lady’s writing desk. This particular one has a pierced brass gallery above two pigeon holes and two central cupboard doors. Concealed behind the doors are three beautiful satinwood mahogany lined drawers. The lower section has a frieze drawer with key and working lock, the interior has the original sliding writing insert with original tooled leather. The antique writing desk stands on four tapering legs finished with small brass rounded feet and has a lower shaped tier. All edges are highlighted with beautiful cross banding in satinwood and have ebony string inlay. It is a medium mahogany with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
