Flagons such as this were filled with beer or cider to quench the thirst of workers in the fields. Though this particular example seems so elaborate that it must have had some commemorative meaning. Another very similar example with flattened sides though without the green jewelling to the handle or the cream coloured piping is in the Hastings museum and dated to the previous year 1845.
Excellent
This Flagon bears a rhyme:
'Steal not this bottle dishonest friend
For fear the gallows should be your end
But if you do may conscience say
Take back the bottle you stole away'
