Born 1936

Gerald Laing was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1936. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art and at the end of his first year, in 1963 he visited New York where he met, and was influenced by, many of the most important artists of the Pop movement, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Indiana. In 1964, at the end of his studies, he returned to New York where he lived and worked for the following five years. He left the United States in 1969 and settled in Scotland where he renovated Kinkell Castle in Ross and Cromarty. There he established a tapestry workshop, and in 1978, a bronze foundry. During the 1970s and 80s, while based in Scotland, he spent periods teaching at Aspen, Colorado, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Columbia University, New York. He has produced a body of sculpture which includes public commissions for Twickenham Stadium and Bank Station in London. In recent years he has returned to painting and printmaking, and has made portraits of Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham which relate to his 1960s Pop imagery.
