This really lovely decorative "scutching knife" would have been given as a love token to a betrothed girl or a wife, in this case a girl with the initials "K E" - the "D" stands for daughter. This example is painted in pale chalky blue with stylised tulips, roses and foliage painted in pink, white and green, and the initials "K E D" and the date 1827; the carved details on the handle are highlighted in yellow and pink. Functional scutching knives were used in the preparation of linen fibres for weaving, but this beautiful example is purely a token of affection. Swedish, circa 1827. Length 21 3/4" (55.3cm).
