A Swedish narrative folk painting on paper of sequential scenes in which a young man in a smart black suit with white buttons appears to be engaged in conversation with a woman in a red dress, a man in a brown coat, and then another man in a blue coat. The first man is being observed by two cows (to the right), and the second man is holding a spade. What is the story being told here? We don't know, but we're charmed by the lovely soft colours that the naive artist has used, primarily red, brown and black, by the details of costume, and by the wonderfully inventive borders and background patterns which "frame" the scenes. The painting is mounted on acid-free backing within a simple modern limed oak frame, Swedish, early 19th century. Height (framed) 13 3/4" (34.9cm) Width (framed) 50 3/4" (129cm)
