The ‘chinoiserie half-figures’ (‘Halbchinesen’) form a small and rare group in the field of early Höroldt chinoiserie decoration. The superb painting represents a first high point of the Höroldt era as a whole, not only because of the brilliance of the enamel colours but also because of the quality of the painting, which is regarded as having come from Johann Gregorius Höroldt’s own hand. The diversity of marking among the half-figures pieces is a particularity of the time when the crossed swords mark was being introduced in the Meissen manufactory.
