Leonard Raven-Hill was born on 10 March 1867 in Bath. He became a painter of genre scenes, was a draughtsman and illustrator. He attended the Lambeth School of Art, London. Whilst there he made friends with Charles Ricketts the painter & industrialist and Charles Shannon. Later he settled in Paris where he attended the Academie Julian studying under William Adolphe Bouguereau and Aime Morot. From 1886 onwards he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais, Paris and then took part in various group exhibitions in London including 3 paintings at the New English Art Club; Royal Academy 8; Fine Art Society 192. He also exhibited 3 at the Grosvenor Gallery; 2 at the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; 4 at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool; 172 at the Leicester Gallery; 6 at the Royal Society of British Artists; 5 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour; 9 at the Royal Institute of Oil painters; 2 at the Royal Scottish Academy.
He was a most celebrated illustrator and produced cartoons for numerous English magazines: Judy; Black and White; Illustrated London News and Punch from 1895 to 1935. He founded Butterfly in 1893 and the Unicorn in 1895. He published his Indian sketchbook in 1903 and illustrated Stalky and Co by Rudyard Kipling; he also published 'Pick me-up'.

Leonard Raven-Hill died on 31 March 1942 in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

This work was almost certainly painted whilst he was in Paris, as the canvas is French and the majority of his work in oils, seem to be French subjects from this early period in his career.

There is a painting by him in the Tate Gallery.
