Peter Marius Hansen was the son of the decorative painter Peter Syrak Hansen and trained from 1884 to 1890 with Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen. He exhibited for the first time at the Kunstakademi in Copenhagen in 1889, showing a group portrait of children, a genre at which he excelled. He then took part in the exhibitions of the secession movement, both at home and abroad, showing at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, Munich in 1909, Duesseldorf in 1911 and the Great Arts Exhibition in Berlin in 1907. In 1893 he was awarded a distinction in Chicago. As a result of his participation in international exhibitions, Hansen became known for his illustrations of ordinary life in natural landscapes, both in his native Denmark and in Italy which he visited on several occasions between 1893 and 1914. This painting is a beautiful example of his work and depicts his two daughters picking apples in an orchard in his native Denmark.

Peter Hansen’s work is represented in Museums in Copenhagen, Goteborg and Faaborg.
