The Battle of Jutland
Oil on canvas, signed lower left
Image size: 30 x 42 inches
Contemporary style frame
The painting shows the first clash between the main body of the Grand Fleet and High Seas Fleet at Jutland, probably between 6.20 and 6.26pm. The German ships can be made out by distant gun flashes off to the right. The two ships in the foreground are the leading vessels of the four-ship 5th Division of the 1st Battle Squadron.
The nearest one would then be HMS Collingwood, while just in front of her would be HMS Colossus, squadron flagship of Admiral Gaunt and the only British dreadnought to be damaged by shellfire in the action.
The ships ahead of them are the 4th Battle Squadron, and from left to right should be HMS Vanguard, HMS Temeraire, HMS Bellerophon, HMS Benbow, HMS Canada, HMS Superb and HMS Royal Oak.
