This is a fine 19th century portrait of a Spanish beauty standing in an alcove by the eminent Victorian artist John Bagnold Burgess RA (1829-1897). ‘The Black Mantilla’ is presented in an original mid-19th century carved giltwood frame. John Bagnold Burgess became famous for his closely observed paintings of the country and people of Spain, in particular of its beautiful young women.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having just been cleaned and re-varnished.

Burgess was 23 when he had his first painting accepted by the Royal Academy. Over the next 28 years he exhibited a total of 73 pictures at the RA, 15 at the British Institution, and at least 40 others at various other major exhibitions. John Bagnold Burgess was elected a full member of the Royal Academy in 1889.
