The Cairngorms are a mountain range in the eastern Highlands of Scotland closely associated with the mountain of the same name – Cairn Gorm. This fine painting has been lost until recently; it was saved from destruction by the railway company and taken home by one of its staff, who kept it in his loft for over fifty years.

This major work shows Wilkinsons clever use of colour to make each part stand out in graphical perspective. The sky and weather play an important part of the composition he has created, the eye is drawn to the different elements such as the dramatic ness of the clouds overhead, the fields in the middle successfully reproducing effects of light, just how one glimpses them when driven past.

Wilkinson has caught the sense of depth between the mountains, capturing the natural beauty and terrifying scale of the place. The beauty of this work is that he has painted it in a new style totally original and his own.
