Derwent Lees was educated in his native Melbourne and in Paris. Coming to London in 1905 he studied at the Slade School, and subsequently taught there. Before the Great War he travelled widely in Europe. He was associated especially with Augustus John and J. D. Innes, with whom he painted in Wales and in the south of France.
