Born on the 10th September 1908 in Paddigton,London, Carel Weight studied at the Hammersmith School of Art 1928-30 and Goldsmiths' College 1931-33. He first exhibited at the R.A. in 1931 and was made an official war artist from 1945-46, visiting Vienna, Austria, Italy and Greece. After the war he joined the painting staff at the Royal College of Art, and became head of painting in 1957 before retiring in 1973. Carel Weight was elected to the Royal Academy in 1965 and held a one man show at the R.A. in 1983. He painted landscapes and portraits and took his subjects from the streets, parks and gardens of west and south London where he lived. Many of his paintings have a spiritual or religious content showing the influence of Edvard Munch and Stanley Spencer. He was also President of the Stanley Spencer Society.
Excellent condition, in original exhibition frame.
Private collection, acquired in the mid 1970's from the Leonie Jonleigh Studio,Wonersh,Guildford,Surrey.
