Listing Information
John Gifford was a painter of sporting dogs, such as spaniels and setters, who was active between 1865-1898. His paintings usually depict dogs guarding game in a landscape setting, often the Highlands. His works sometimes included horses and other animals such as Highland sheep alongside his favourite dogs. He was known to be a keen sportsman and his paintings display a deep understanding of the anatomy of the animals as well as a love of the landscape.
Dogs had long been used for sports other than fighting and for centuries had been used to control vermin. The Victorian era was the age of pet portraits, with the most important influence on their popularity being Queen Victoria who owned an extensive number of dog breeds including terriers. This created a demand for portraits of dogs and artists such as Gifford found themselves in great demand. His works were highly popular and would undoubtedly have received commissions from his sporting fan friends.
The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
