A Regency mahogany adjustable music chair.

This high quality music chair was once part of the important collection of the Dukes of Hamilton at Hamilton Palace in Scotland. Their vast wealth was mainly due to coal mining on their large estate. Their ancestral home fell victim to subsidence caused by mining too close by, however, and had to be demolished.

Most of the furnishings were sold off at the time, but some choice pieces were moved to Lennoxlove, a considerably smaller house in the same region of Scotland. This is where the chair remained until the refurbishment of the Great Hall at Lennoxlove some years ago.
