Irwin studied in Paris at the Academie Julian and in 1926 at the Academie des Beaux Arts in Brussels. Severely wounded in the First World War he was left paralysed but despite his disability he painted and exhibited prolifically at the Royal Academy, Royal Glasgow Institute, New English Art Club and Royal Society of British Artists, of which he was elected a member. He painted a number of Royal and military events as well as landscape and coastal scenes. He lived in Surrey, London and Warwickshire and spent intervals in St Ives. He took his own life in 1947.

An exhibition of his work was recently held at Panter & Hall, London.
