Rosemary (Rosemarie) Gartner was born in Arnstadt, Germany in 1918. She is believed to be related to the Austrian painter Hermine Gartner (1846-1905) with whom she shares a similar style and subject matter.
She studied at the Leipzig Academy and also at the Munich Academy of Arts where she was taught composition and figure painting by Professor Hermann Casper. Initially, she focussed on landscape painting but later developed an interest in portraiture. Gartner exhibited in Weimar, Munich and Leipzig.
Like Hermine, Rosemary specialised in portraits of Bavarian men in taverns or at home in a style similar to that of Franz Xavier Wolfe (1887–1972), Gustave Kohler (1859-1930), Hugo Kotschenreiter (1854-1908) and Erwin Eichinger (1892-1950). She settled in Upper Bavaria after World War II where she continued to paint portraits of local characters.

The painting is housed in its original English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
