This fine watercolour study of the garden at the Hotel Rainbeaux displays Emma Roberts' talent as a portrayer of interiors and as a talented landscape artist versed in the study of paysagistes, no doubt scrutinised in the Louvre.

This well-documented garden is indicative of the size of the grounds accompanying the newly fashionable quarter of large town houses around the Champs Elysees, still to be seen at for example, the American and British Embassies. The size enabled the creation of the form of picturesque garden blending a mixture of the Tivoli gardens with the English Picturesque, so prized throughout Europe. The lack of formal beddings or architectural details is interesting and remarkable when compared to eighteenth-century Louis XVI examples. This may be because many of the houses were let or sold speculatively and later fittings and designs were intended to be the responsibility of the final owner.
