Rupert Shephard was born in Islington on 12th February 1909. He worked in oil, watercolour, etching and lithography. He studied at the Slade under Henry Tonks. From 1929 he exhibited with the London Group of painters as well as exhibiting at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club and the Royal Portrait Gallery.He was appointed an official war artist in 1945. He taught at the Central School of Arts and Crafts 1946-48, and in South Africa at the Michaelis School of Art at Cape Town 1948-63.

His works can been seen in numerous public collections, including the Imperial War Museum,the National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum.
