Renowned British Artist Charles Walter Simpson was born in Surrey 1885. He had a colourful career as an Artist and has exhibited in the Royal Academy a number of times. Simpson studied in Paris at the Academie Julian in 1910 and would later continue painting and to write and teach at the St. Ives School of Painting. Simpson also had many published books including illustrations and many of his writings are held at th the WCAA collection.
As a painter famous for his animal painting (in particular, birds and horses) he was a great fan of the annual Grand National Horse races and often used this as subject matter for his pieces. The painting shows a scene at the Grand National, where four Jockeys and their horses leap over a fence as another rider is flung from his falling horse after failing the jump.
