Jules Noel was a painter whose works are renowned for their charm. His drawings are lively and his watercolours and paintings are executed with unmistakable verve. Noel studied under Cherioux in Brest before moving to Paris and debuted at the Salon in 1840, continuing to exhibit there until 1879. He was a versatile artist who could turn his hand to watercolours, pastels and lithographs and he was particularly successful in his depictions of the Normandy coast, ranking alongside Eugéne Isabey in terms of quality. His works are well represented in museums in this country, with three at the Bowes Museum in County Durham. One of his finest works hangs at the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich and depicts Napoleon 111 receiving Queen Victoria at Cherbourg. His scenes of family life in the town, country and by the sea are picturesque and life-affirming social documents. |
