This imposing garden front illustrates the privacy allowing immediate ground floor communication with the garden in which elegant figures are sitting in conversation. The first floor housed family bedrooms and the attics, nurseries and servants. The architectural style typifies the fashionable Second Empire with its blending of eighteenth century and Renaissance Italianate detail. The usual circular carriage drive defines a lawn informally planted with trees and bedding plants; the garden has evolved from the state seen in Emma Roberts' picture (plate 49). A woman in an elaborately draped silk dress recalls the days of the great English couturier Charles Frederick Worth and the dancing child suggests relaxed family life. This watercolour was probably a parting memento on the marriage of Louise, the daughter of the house.
