1st Earl of Lonsdale, K.G. (1757-1844), of 14-15 Carlton House Terrace, London and Lowther Castle, Cumberland. Thence by descent to Lancelot, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1867-1953), sold Christie's, London, February 19, 1947, lot 52. William, Earl of Lonsdale, was the cousin and heir of Sir James Lowther, one of the wealthiest men in 18th century England. Created Earl of Lonsdale in his own right in 1807, he had Robert Smirke spend eight years turning Lowther Hall into Lowther Castle.
