Munoz belonged to a family with great prominence in the cultural life of Granada. His brother Rafael, a distinguished Arabist, as an architect was the curator of the Alhambra. Contreras y Munoz studied at the School of Fine Arts in Granada and in the workshop of Francisco Enríquez and Agapito López de San Román.

In 1847 he continued his studies at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, with Federico de Madrazo and Juan Antonio Ribera. In 1854 he moved to Córdoba, where he was appointed director of the city museum.

From 1861, he devoted himself to teaching, first in the School of Fine Arts of Cádiz and then in that of Valencia. In 1864 he attended the National Exhibition of Fine Arts with "The Doubt of San Pedro", with which he won a second class medal. In 1865, following the death of his wife, he moved to Madrid, where he taught at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He died in 1889.
