David Bates was a Midlands landscape painter who worked in and around the West Midlands, Worcestershire and North Wales. Although he was born in Cambridgeshire, he spent his early life in Worcestershire, later becoming an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works. Bates is known for his views of the Wales and the Midlands, however, he also spent time in North Africa painting producing a number of works from his travels. Bates exhibited 29 works at the Royal Academy from 1863-1893, and 70 works at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. Bates’s style and subjects were influenced by Benjamin Williams Leader and were similar to that of other members of the Birmingham School such as Joseph Thors and S.H. Baker. His paintings are well balanced and display his love for open-air painting.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
