The Nibelungenlied belongs to a tradition of the handing down of myth relating to Siegfried to successive generations. Wagner took the source and make adaptions to provide the libretto for his cycle The Ring.

Dating from a first edition of 1850,the translator,William Nanson Lettsom, makes a contemporary remark concerning the poem 'is so little known among us,that most ordinary readers have not so much as heard of it'. By the date of the edition offered,1873,the situation may have changed somewhat as Wagner's Ring Cycle was already being performed.

Clean Black and gilded pattern and gilded spine onto green cloth, cloth some marking commensurate with the age of the volume,University of Keele plate to endpapers and barcode and some staining.
