THE OLD MILL IN SUSSEX
JOHN BRANDON SMITH
Born Circa 1838 Signed & dated 1879 & label verso
Oil on canvas 28 x 36 inches
Framed size 32 ¾ x 40 ¾ inches
J.B. Smith was a London landscape painter born in Middlesex.
He exhibited his work from 1859 to 1884, at the Royal Academy 1860 -1874, the British Institute and Suffolk Street. Also 2 at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham; 4 at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool; 4 at Manchester City Art Gallery; 2 at the Royal Society of British Artists; 1 at the Royal Hibernian Academy; 4 at the Royal Scottish Academy; 22 at Arthur Tooth & Sons Gallery.
There is some confusion over the date of his birth. Traditionally it was thought he was born in 1848 but this would make him 12 years of age when his first Royal Academy exhibit was shown in 1860. One site on the Internet quotes 1838, which seems more likely. However he still died young at around 48.
He is mainly known for his pictures of rivers & waterfalls.
In 1882 J.B. Smith lived at Grantham’s, Chiddingfold, Surrey.
His works are often small pairs of waterfalls views, so works of this subject and scale are rare. His paintings are much collected today.
