George Heriot was born in Haddington, Scotland - the eldest son of the sheriff clerk of the town. From a wealthy family, he enjoyed a solid classical education before studying art in Edinburgh.

In 1777 Heriot travelled to London with the intention of commencing an artistic career, but for some reason was diverted to the West Indies. He completed many paintings, sketches and poems whilst there, and upon his return to London in 1781 he published 'A Descriptive Poem, written in the West Indies'. He then enrolled at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich, where he studied landscape drawing, then considered an essential part of military education. It was probably at this time that he was introduced to the Picturesque style of painting, for which he is so renowned.
After completing his studies at Woolwich, Heriot became a civilian clerk for the army before being posted to Quebec in 1792. He stayed in Canada for over twenty-five years, working as the Deputy Postmaster General but also travelling extensively in his free time. He published two books of his writings and paintings - The History of Canada from its first discovery (1804), and Travels through the Canadas (1807).
