Return of the Holy Family from Egypt

Second half of the 17th century
oil on canvas

(cm) 72 x 53
with frame 81 x 62

This beautiful painting tells an episode of the Gospels, representing the Holy Family during the "return of the flight to Egypt": the three figures are presented in the extreme attitude of tenderness, where Saint Joseph lovingly holds Maria as you walk to Nazareth after Herod's death, and watched by three cherubim.

And the relatively mature aspect of Christ, no newborn, and the presence of the three cherubs radiated from the saving light from above, suggesting that the work does not represent the episode of flight to Egypt, but the rarer subject of the return of the escape in Egypt.

The work is located in the production of Girolamo Troppa, an interesting figure of 17th century Roman painting, with strong stylistic and cultural autonomy;

In this painting, the Holy Family is framed in front of a wooded background, with a wide open landscape on the right side that ends with a glimpse of a Middle Eastern city, probably the city of Nazareth. Many similarities with similar subjects painted by Troppa can be found in some landscape and structural elements.
