Bishop Young was a brilliant scientist and scientific writer, and at the time this portrait was painted he was a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. Three years later, he became Bishop of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh (1799-1800), but he died of cancer in Whitworth, near Rochdale, Lancashire in 1800 at the age of 50.
