Heinrich Georg Michaelis was a portrait and genre painter who was born in Loessnitz in the Erzgebirge (Saxony) region of Germany in 1837. He trained at the Dresden Academy of Art until 1857. During the mid-1860’s he attended the Antwerp Academy of Art where he studied under Jozef Van Lerius (1823-1876) and Nicaise de Keyser (1813-1887). From around 1878 he settled in Frankfurt. In December 1891, he travelled to Poland and visited the town of Lodz where he produced a number of drawings of tavern scenes portraying Jewish traders, peasants, soldiers and everyday folk. He painted a number of Jewish subjects and he is widely believed to be of Jewish descent.
Examples of his paintings can be found in The Library of Innerpeffray, Scotland.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
