THE TOY BOAT
EDWARD CHARLES WILLIAMS
1807 - 1881 Signed & dated 1860
Oils on canvas 24 x 41 ¾ inches
Framed size 30 ½ x 48 ¼ inches
E.C. Williams was a member of the famous Williams family of painters and the eldest son of Edward Williams. Like his father, he painted mainly views along the Thames and some coastal scenes. It is known he sometimes collaborated with William Shayer on large gypsy or village scenes. He exhibited work at the Royal Academy from 1840 -1864, the British Institution and Suffolk Street. There is an unmistakably English quality about the village scenes of this painter, his use of pale ochre’s, fresh blues and a subtle contrast of warm and cold greys add to the unassuming charm of his paintings.
He had several addresses in Tottenham Court Road artist’s quarter but was the only Williams who never lived in Barnes, which seems to place him slightly outside the family circle. Although his move to Buckingham Cottage, Hammersmith in 1854 was immediately on the other side of the Thames. His first wife Mary Ann died in 1857. His only child Alice was born in the following year to the nurse who had been looking after his wife.
Towards the end of his career E.C had a serious eye disease and failing sight, he remained in Hammersmith for many years at his home West Lodge. He had to give up painting in the early 1870’s.
Edward Charles Williams died in respectable poverty at 17 Goldhawk Road, Shepherds Bush aged 74, on 25 July 1881.
