Gandy was a painter of landscapes, genre and literary subjects and also an illustrator of books. There is no recorded birth date for him or indeed any information about his formal art training. The first record of him is in the French magazine Gazette des Beaux- Art in 1879 to coincide with his first exhibit at the London Royal Academy.
His style of painting in the early years owes much to the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but later works such as this one show more of the ‘realism’ one finds in the works of Arthur Hacker, Herbert Draper and Herbert Harkomer. A wonderful use of colour and light abounds in his paintings.

He exhibited 12 paintings at the Royal Academy from 1879 including the titles, ‘Men were Deceivers Ever’ and The Viking’s Homecoming’.
From 1879 to 1883 he exhibited at Suffolk Street. Also he exhibited 12 paintings at the Royal Society of Artists Birmingham, 2 at Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, 9 at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool, 2 at Manchester City Art Gallery, 2 at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 2 at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and 2 at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

He lived in London in Chelsea Gardens. Gandy had a son, Walter who also painted and exhibited from the same address in the early 20th Century. Gandy died on 29 September 1934.
