British Artist Evelyn Stuart Hardy was born in Clifton, Bristol in 1866 to Artist parents David & Emily Hardy. From a young age, Evelyn produced illustrations for children's books by publishers Ernest Niste, who were well known for their pop up books.
Her work was used in many publications and also created some of her own works such as: 'The Book of Gnomes', 'Me and my Doggies' and 'Me and my Ponies'. Her works also included biblical scenes and would reference verses. Mainly using watercolours throughout her career, this painting is a true example of the talents of Evelyn and the scene depicts a scene from the New Testament (Matthew: 21: 33-39), in which the tenants of a rented farm, attack and kill the servants sent by the landowner to collect the fruit from the harvest. The landowner eventually sends his son in the belief that they will respect him, but he is instead attacked and killed for his inheritance.
