Good quality, mid-19th Century figured mahogany Stick Barometer in essentially original condition. The “ogee” pediment over glazed, well-engraved silvered brass register plate, bearing Fahrenheit mercury thermometer, rack-and-pinion operated vernier, and signed by the maker. The trunk, of well-patinated, figured Cuban mahogany, edge moulded, and with the original concealed barometer cistern tube terminating within turned cistern cover.

“Jones of Charing Cross” [1775-1852] was a highly accomplished Instrument-maker, who flourished for over 50 years from the end of his apprenticeship to the renowned Jesse Ramsden, working primarily from his premises at 62 Charing Cross. He was elected F.R.S. in 1835.
