Daily tribal life in Papua New Guinea revolved around gardening, hunting and on the coast fishing, which was not without hazards. An archaeological site on the North Coast has uncovered numerous puffer fish bones which account for 14% of all the fish caught in the area. The flesh and viscera of puffer fish are highly toxic and the poison can be absorbed by simple skin contact, but like the modern Japanese gourmet, the ancient people at Dongan had obviously mastered the art of preparing and cooking puffer fish for consumption over 6000 years ago.
