J.T. Mitchell was a well-known British-American miniaturist who exhibited in London between 1798 and 1830 and was also active in Baltimore, in the United States.
Roche was deaf and dumb which did not deter him from producing excellent portraits of which his miniatures are some of the best produced by an Irish artist. He painted several members of the Royal Family and is said to have been offered knighthood, an honour he declined on account of his infirmity.
