William Henry Knight was born in Newbury in 1823, the son of a school master. He initially trained and worked as a Solicitor continuing to paint in his spare time. However, he gave up his career to pursue painting after two of his works were accepted by the Society of Artists into their annual exhibition. In 1845, he moved to Kennington Road, London where he enrolled at the Royal Academy School. Knight started exhibiting regularly at the Royal Academy from 1846-1862. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street and the British Institution He specialised in portrait and genre scenes of children playing in the street similar in the tradition of William Mulready. His depiction of poor but happy children with their well observed expressions and gestures made his works highly popular. Knight died in London on 31 July 1863, leaving a widow and six children.

Examples of his work can be found at the National Museum Wales, Tunbridge Wells Museum & Art Gallery, and the Wolverhampton Art Gallery.

The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
