Edwin Hughes was born on 3 February, 1851 in Westminster, the son of William Hughes a picture dealer. He specialised in genre scenes and portraits and lived and worked in the capital for most of his life. Hughes exhibited 11 works at the Royal Academy from 1880. He also exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Oils, Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, Walker Art Gallery and the Manchester City Art Gallery. He died in Hammersmith in 1915. His figures are well drawn, showing a keen observation for human nature. Each figure is given a different character with their facial expressions and body language, allowing us to be drawn into the enfolding visual dialogue. His interiors are also highly detailed giving added interest and extra depth to the scene.
The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frame, which is in excellent condition.
