A beautifully made treen ladle, possibly used to measure a sailor’s daily tot of grog, a custom that British Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon introduced to the naval squadron he commanded in the West Indies in 1740. The handle is fastened to the bowl with a turned screw, allowing the two pieces to be separated, and so safer to transport.
English, turned wood, circa 1820
