A blotter cover with a view of Eridge Castle with people in front of the building. They are walking on a path between two lawns depicted by veneers of green or diseased oak. To the left of the foreground is a tree. The view is set within a border of lilies against a dark background, which contrasts with the lighter background veneer, which shows to great advantage on the back of the blotter cover. (Possibly figured ash?).

This view of Eridge was made by Thomas Barton as part of a specially commissioned design for the Marquess of Abergavenny and which was used on a wine table, complete with the family motto - "Ne Vile Velis-Incline to Nothing Base". A water colour drawing of this design is in Tunbridge Wells Museum.

Please note Barton used the same tree mosaic on some of his pieces with his renowned view of Battle Abbey Gatehouse. On that view the tree is placed on the right but is sometimes omitted from the design.

The blotter cover is now re-lined in green leather.

Offered for sale with the blotter cover, is an un-used block of the top section of the tree.
