An interesting box with a panel of perspective cubes to the lid and with an original paper chart denoting the veneers.

Both Edmund Nye and Thomas Barton frequently used panels of perspective cubes on their boxes and as with this box, they sometimes produced an accompanying chart naming the veneers. The chart with this box indicates that there are no less than forty different veneers on the central panel.

This box is now unlabelled, although there is evidence that one did originally exist. Nevertheless we are attributing it to Thomas Barton, on the strength of the oak leaf border and the stylized border to the lid. It is worth mentioning that it has a very unusual walnut background veneer – something not usually associated with Barton, who typically liked coromandel and ebony.

The interior of the box has its original paper lining, which is a blue version of a design frequently used by Nye and Barton.
