This glove box unusually has a dark coloured oak as its background veneer. It is probably bog wood, a term used to describe timber, which would have been retrieved from waterlogged ground. In the case of oak, tannin in the wood reacts with the water and causes the wood to darken.

The glove box has borders of miniature parquetry with a view of Buckhurst Park, some ten miles from Tunbridge Wells, close to Withyham in East Sussex. During the 1830’s tessellated mosaic marquetry was developed, suitable for making topographical designs. One variant of this was gauge work, which used textured and shaped elements, eminently suitable for depicting architectural features. This technique has been employed on the Buckhurst view to good effect and is generally considered to be the work of Edmund Nye from the 1840’s.
