Born in Methil, Fife, Gear studied at Edinburgh College of Ar 1932-37. After studying in Paris with Fernand Leger,after winning a scholarship Gear travelled in Italy and the Balkans. After Army service in World War II Gear lived in France until 1950. He returned to Britain and in 1951 won a Festival of Britain Purchase Prize.
Gear was head of the faculty of fine art in Birmingham College of Art in 1964, guest lecturer at National Gallery of Victoria Melburne and University of Western Australia, Perth in 1966.

Associated with the Cobra Group in the years following World War II, Gear exhibited widely internationally and in the UK. In 1997 Redfern Gallery London held a Fifty Year Retrospective and another in 2003.
William Gear & COBRA toured from Aberdeen Art Gallery 1997-8. His work is in public collections including the Tate Gallery. He was elected Senior RA in 1995
