They have been known all over Europe since medieval times , the word Oliphant deriving from Elephant . Ivory horns originally came from Arab artists working in Sicily and the Iberian Peninsula , and from the Orient . Later in the 15 th and early 16 th centuries they began to come to Europe from Africa carved by the Sapi working for Portuguese masters .
The sound produced by the Oliphant is remarkably similar to the actual trumpeting of an elephant . They all retain the shape of an intact tusk , but they range in size from small shrill six inch ( 15 cm ) ones to enormous tusks as long as 8 feet ( 244 cm ) . In many areas of Africa several horns of different sizes are played in concert , especially at royal ceremonial events .
